Week 1 findings and Tech Explorations 1-3

Reading assignments, Explorations, Discussion Boards and more.  It has been a little bit of a busy learning week, however very informative.  It started with various sites to read.  I think my favorite so far, was the Edutopia site.  http://www.edutopia.org  I feel like it will be one that I refer to often.  Teacher guidelines, classroom focuses by grade, new technology, social & emotional learning and so much more are things discussed, shown and reviewed on this site.

There was of course, the traditional standards that needed to be covered, via the NETS *T with a discussion board assignment to follow.  We had to choose one of the standards, and explain the steps you take, have taken or will to meet this indicator.  I chose 'Design & Develop Digital Age Learning'.  We then had to respond to 2 other posts.  This was a huge piece for me, due to not being very familiar with blogs or discussion boards.  I feel like that a huge hurdle for me has been fear of the unknown when it comes to new technology.  It is one thing to surf the web and see what's out there.  It is another when asked to set up a blog, read & then write on a new subject matter.  Change brings out growth and I feel that this is just the beginning.

Once becoming a teacher, I would love to be look further into the Tumblebooks option and see if this is would be available at my school.  The children would love this and I feel would greatly benefit  from the program.  Steps to insure we start the program, would of course be to see if we have the capabilities or funding now.  If not, then ask for approval for the trial basis.  The challenges I might be able to see, could possibly be with working it into the content. Making sure that the books read could possibly cross over with other subjects as well.  I believe a little bit of planning and coordinating could take care of that challenge.

Describe what you learned from exploring this resource.  Be thorough in your response.

At first glance, this site looked to be just a sales brochure.  I wasn’t 100% for sure if I would learn anything or not.  Once clicking on various links, I learned quite a bit in regards to ways to set up communication for a classroom or even school, as well as definitions of terms that I had heard before but didn’t truly understand.  An example would be:  wiki.  I knew it was web based, however I didn’t know that it was a collaboration of multiple people and that it could be set up for particular classes or project groups.  I also learned the term ‘crowdsourcing’.

How could you use this resource in a school setting?  It does not matter if it is in your field or level, you need to understand how the resource might be used in educational settings.

I believe that this resource could be used to see new pieces of virtual learning.  There were various articles within the site that offered up different ways to exercise the video learning.  For example:  Video your instruction and have the students watch the video online for their homework and then their class time would consist of working thru the traditional homework.  This way would provide a way for the students to rewind and play back a portion that needs more attention until they have mastered it and then the work portion offers the teacher being right there.  So, in an ever changing world this could offer new technology to your classroom and give examples on how to best implement.
In addition, PBWorks offers online communication for your classroom.  Depending of the level you wish, it could be free or pay a small fee to increase your options.

Would you recommend this resource to other educators? Like/Dislike; Ease of use, fee or not, and so forth.  Why or Why not?

I would recommend this site for a quick look at new technology for your classroom, as well as, if someone was looking for ease of linking communication. Currently I seem to feel that I am torn between several communication sites that I have to monitor for our daughter.  It would be great to have a system like PBworks at the Middle School Level.  The system is easy to use and is in a Word format.

Tumblebooks.com
Tikatok.com

In reviewing both of these sites, both have to do with online books of some form.  Tumblebooks seemed great for offering such a variety of reading skills.  With varied levels of reading in a classroom, I liked the fact that one child could read the book, while another could listen.  Both children receive the same information, but able to learn at their own pace and in their own way.  Spanish & French options are offered as well, being a major asset to a lot of classrooms.  The site offers puzzles, games & quizzes which can reinforce the concepts and test their knowledge.  Lesson Plans are offered to work with the books as well.  In watching one of the the books being read online, in my opinion, the illustrations seemed right on.  The Tikatok took a different approach though, and was for the students to be creative and make their own written book.  The students would have access to write online and then have it digitally printed and shipped to them.

Tumblebooks could be used in many different areas of a school setting.  From library to individual classrooms.  I can see reading intervention teachers using it with their students. We are constantly trying to work towards our students being more fluent readers.  How awesome to hear it and then have the ability it start reading slow and get faster at their own pace? As comprehension increases right along with this, this could be so great.
I could see the Tikatok site being used for a special writing assignment or project.  Collaboration between writing and science, social studies and/or language arts could come into play on a project.

I would most definitely recommend this Tumblebook to other educators.  It seems really easy to us and once purchased, it is available to not just 1 person, but to the entire school, so everyone benefits.  Reading in my house seems to be a struggle.  Our son’s level is not as high as his friend’s level, however the interest levels are the same.  Having possibly the book on the Tumblebook site could offer that assistance, so that the student doesn’t get discouraged reading lower level books where the interest isn’t there.
I would recommend the Tikatok site to other educators.  It seemed extremely easy.  How cool of an assignment would the kids think they had, and work really hard on, if the final piece was printed and available to share with the family.  I think that educators would love seeing their students thrive in learning and creativity.

Epnweb.org seems to be a site supposedly to offer 21st century learning & teaching in one place, however, I learned this from an overview of another site talking about it.  When trying to access the site from different areas, the site would not come up.

Mr. Langhorst’s Classroom Website was phenomenal!  I saw a great site having multiple ways to connect and communicate with the students, parents and staff.  The podcasts were amazing, showing another way to offer students a study session for their tests.  The online calendar of daily class work and homework was a great communication tool as well.

Iste.org offered a ‘top ten’ question piece to be sure to ask yourself before determining if the podcast should be used in your classroom or if it would be the best option to offer your students to learn. In just learning more regarding podcasts, I can keep the list of questions on hand to refer back to later.  Due to the fact that these are done by individuals and not governed, they need to be screened for appropriate content before showing to a class.

Epnweb.org could be used to learn new ways of technology, if the bugs are fixed.

Mr. Langhorst’s site offers a great example of how to set up a complete communication model for a classroom.

Iste.org- this site is good for review and starting into podcasts.  From this, you can go out there and find what will best help your students.

Epnweb.org might be worth a second look ever so often to see if new things are available.

Mr. Langhourst’s site, I would recommend, especially if you are looking to see how a classroom site can be used to its full potential.  It was extremely easy to navigate.

Iste.org- I would definitely recommend, just for the ‘top ten’.  The guidelines were very helpful.  This site was in a pdf form and easy to access, read and would be a great piece to print for future reference.
